Location and Access
Black Hut is located within the town of Burrillville, RI. Access can
be gained along Spring Lake Road, with portions of the management area
also bordering Douglas Pike and West Ironstone Road. Graveled roads
exist within the area, most of which are gated to limit vehicle
access. U.S.G.S. Topographic quad maps for Chepachet, RI and Uxbridge,
MA cover this area.
Habitat
Black Hut covers a total land area of 1548 acres. The area is composed
of primarily forest land (deciduous 1158 acres, evergreen 163 acres),
wetlands (171 acres), and agricultural land (18.5 acres). The DFW
maintains a series of wildlife farming fields and food plots to add
diversity to the area and provide food and cover for bath game and
non-game species of wildlife.
Wildlife
Typical game mammals found within the Black Hut area include
cottontail rabbits, grey squirrel, white-tailed deer, fox, raccoon,
and coyote. Typical game birds include ruffed grouse, ring-necked
pheasants and waterfowl. A small waterfowl marsh of approximately 3
acres is present and maintained by the DFW. Ample opportunity also
exists to observe non-game mammals, birds and insects.
