Location and Access
Carolina Management Area is located within the western portion of the
town of Richmond, RI. The area extends from Kenyon Hill Trail in the
north to Route 91 at its southern-most point. Access to Carolina is
available at several locations with main access points at the hunter
check station on Pine Hill Road, along Shipee Trail off Hope Valley
Road, along Meadowbrook Trail north of Pine Hill Road and from Route
112 at the gravel pit entrance north of the State Trout Hatchery. Most
of the interior road are gated to limit vehicle access. Topographic

Habitat
Carolina covers a total land area of 2359 acres. The area is composed
of primarily forest cover (evergreen 960 acres, deciduous 456 acres),
wetlands (280 acres) and agricultural lands (134 acres) making up the
balance. The DFW maintains approximately 42 management fields which
are intensively managed by the DFW for the purpose of increasing food
and cover for game and non-game wildlife. Management practices include
planting of food and cover crops, maintaining periodic mowing of brush
fields, and mowing of pasture grasslands. this diverse area includes
several hundred feet of frontage along the Pawcatuck River including
forested, shrub and emergent wetlands. The American Fish Culture
parcel, added in 1995, contains an active state trout hatchery
operated by DFW.
Wildlife
Carolina supports a wide variety of both game and non-game species of
wildlife. Typical game mammals found in the area include cottontail
rabbits, grey squirrel, white-tailed deer, and furbearers such as fox,
raccoon, coyote, muskrat, and mink. Game birds found in the area
include ruffed grouse, wild turkey, ring-necked pheasant, woodcock,
and bobwhite. Diverse habitats available in the area also support
abundant populations of non-game wildlife with ample opportunity for
observation of these species available.
