Location and Access
Wickaboxet Wildlife Management Area is located within the town of West
Greenwich, RI. Access to the area is gained from Plain Meeting House
Road to a small parking area along Wickaboxet Trail. The gravel roads
within the management area are gated to limit access to foot traffic
and non-motorized vehicles only. The management area is found on the
Coventry, RI topographic quad sheet.
Habitat
Wickaboxet Wildlife Management Area covers a total land area of 678
acres. The land is dominated by forested cover composed of primarily
deciduous forest cover (589 acres - 86% of area) and evergreen forest
cover (27 acres - 3% of area). Wetlands cover the remainder of the
parcel (60 acres) consisting of forested and shrub dominated wetlands.
Wildlife
Typical game mammals found within the Wickaboxet area include
cottontail rabbits, grey squirrels, white-tailed deer and furbearers
such as fox, coyote, and raccoon. Game birds using the area include
ruffed grouse, wild turkey, and woodcock. Forest habitat present also
support populations of non-game wildlife, including various songbirds,
birds of prey, amphibians, reptiles and insects, with ample
opportunity for observation of these species.
